Celine Dion: Legend in Her Own Time

Celine Dion is one of those singers whose voice is instantly recognizable, practically anywhere in the world. She’s a best-seller not only in her native Canada, but in the United States, across Europe, and into Asia. She’s won Juno Awards, Grammys, and even an Oscar for “My Heart Will Go On”, perhaps her most famous song. Today, she still tours the world, with the occasional show in Las Vegas, most of them selling out very quickly.

A Prodigy

Celine Dion was born into a large Franco-Canadian family in Quebec, the youngest child, with thirteen older siblings. Her family was a musical family, with both of her parents trained in music. The parents even ran a small club in their little town of Charlemagne and the children would perform on the weekends to entertain visitors. From the age of five, Celine would sing for people, and when she was twelve she created a tape with the help of her family members. This simple act would change her life.

The demo tape happened to find its way into the hands of Rene Angelil, a personal manger with a good reputation in show business. Upon hearing the young Celine’s voice, he realized he had a potential star on his hands. He was so sure of her talent that he mortgaged his own house to make sure Celine’s debut album was recorded.

The first album, performed in French, got her further notice. She won the top award at the Yamaha World Song Festival in 1982. Her record went gold in France in1983 – she was the first Canadian to ever accomplish this. The French-speaking world was well-acquainted with the incomparable voice of Celine Dion by 1988.

The rest of the world came to love Celine as well when she released her first English album, called Unison. The single “Where Does My Heart Beat Now” got her a great deal of attention and offers. She sang a duet with Peabo Bryson for the Disney version of Beauty and the Beast, which won her the first of her Academy Awards.

Celine Dion’s most famous song, perhaps, came in 1999. The song “My Heart Will Go On” was the theme for one of the biggest movies of all time, Titanic. This song, on both the soundtrack for the movie and in her own album, Let’s Talk About Love, help to sell more than twenty-seven million copies of each album. It also earned her more Grammys, a Golden Globe Award, and another Academy Award.

She took a break from music at the close of the 20th century to attend to family, only to come back strong in 2002, winning more awards, and securing a contract to sing nightly in Las Vegas in Caesar’s Palace where she sold out consistently for years.

Celine Dion Fragrances

With Celine Dion’s great fame came great opportunities. One of these was a partnership with Coty to produce a line of fragrances in Dion’s name. The first of these was called Celine, and debuted in 2003.

Celine, that first fragrance, is much like the woman herself – cheery, full of gentle passion. It is a floral fragrance, with musky and woody notes. This fragrance includes notes of heliotrope, lily, violet, cyclamen, jasmine, musk, amber, red fruit, sandalwood, and bergamot. It was made for daily wear, but due to its complexity, it can be worn for those special nights, as well.

Enchanting was launched in 2006. It opens with notes of red berries and osmanthus; its heart is composed of gardenia, orchid, and freesia; the heart is sandalwood, tonka, and amber. Over all, it is rich and wildly floral, with a warm oriental feel.

Parfum Notes is another floral women’s fragrance. This clear and fresh composition opens with gardenia, water lily, mimosa, and nectarine; the heart is made from heliotrope, orchid, and peony; the base is guaiac wood, vetiver, sandalwood, and white musk.

The Music Goes On

Much like her music, her fragrance line created hit after hit. Millions of people want to feel something of the beauty of her music, to be a part of the life that has influenced and inspired so many people. She is the best selling female artist of all time, with more than two hundred million albums sold around the world. Her French language album, D’eux, is still the best selling album in that language, ever. No matter where she goes from now, her legacy will go on.
