Beckham: His and Hers

David and Victoria Beckham are internationally famous celebrities, known at first for entirely different reasons, but today both known for their glamorous style. Called “Posh and Becks” by those who followed them in the media, the pair met in 1997 and tied the knot in 1999. He is one of the most famous soccer players in the world today and she was once a member of the Spice Girls who found her biggest fame in the fashion and fragrance industry.

The Football Star and the Pop Star

David Beckham signed a professional contract with his first soccer team, Manchester United, when he was only 17. United was on a winning streak during Beckham’s time there, gaining multiple Premiere League titles, the FA cup two times, and even the World Club Championship. He then played four seasons with Real Madrid, where they won the La Liga championship. He then came to America to play for the LA Galaxy, also spending some time in Italy on loan to AC Milan.

He has played more than one hundred professional games to date, but is as much famed for his good looks and stylish demeanor as much as he is for his impressive soccer skills.

Victoria Beckham, then Victoria Adams, first became internationally famous as one of the members of the girl group, the Spice Girls. Victoria was “Posh Spice” because of her trendy mode of dress and somewhat haughty demeanor. In the late 90s, the group was a sensation, with a string of number one hits, a number of successful world tours, and even a feature film.

The Spice Girls went their separate ways in 2000, and Victoria made a brief attempt at a solo career before trying her hand at fashion. Her identity as the fashionable Posh Spice did her some good, because she was already known as a major icon of current style. She spent time as a model, did some consulting and editing for fashion enterprises, and eventually began her own line of clothing and fragrances.

It is truly the fashion business that has given Victoria Beckham success and acclaim. Both her autobiography and fashion book have become major bestsellers, and together with her husband, she has been a trendsetter in the realm of what we wear, from suits, to dresses, to accessories, to fragrances.

An Aura of Glamour

Together, the couple produces their fragrances in collaboration with cosmetics giant Coty. First was a men’s fragrance, David Beckham’s Instinct, but many of the fragrances are launched in pairs. The advertisements often feature provocatively posed pictures of the attractive pair, which undoubtedly contributes to the remarkable sales figures the Beckham brand enjoys.

Instinct is an aromatic men’s fragrance, introduced in 2005. It’s a warm and fresh scent, with notes of star anise, vetiver, pimento, patchouli, mandarin, cardamom, white amber, and bergamot.

One of the more popular paired fragrances is Intimately Beckham, released in 2006. The men’s fragrance, in particular, was a hit with both fashion professionals and the general public, winning two FiFi Awards in 2008. It opens with fruity notes of bergamot and grapefruit, with a heart of violet, nutmeg, and star anise. Amber, patchouli, and sandalwood are at its base. The women’s version, full of passion and seduction, includes scents of bergamot, cinnamon, lily, neroli, sandalwood, vanilla, and other notes to blend perfectly with its masculine counterpart – though it stands perfectly well on its own.

Another pair, Intimately Beckham Night, is an even sexier variant of the original Intimately Beckham. Bottled in smooth and sensuously curved purple glass, the women’s version is rich with notes of bergamot, cinnamon, lily, and mandarin root. Spicy, woody, and sweet touches from sandalwood, neroli, tonka, vanilla, and myrrh help to create a wholly seductive harmony. The masculine version has a darker, stronger tone with elements of ginger, coffee grains, vetiver, and even a touch of incense, among other scents like violet, mandarin and cardamom.

Like Beckham

The fragrances and fashions of David and Victoria Beckham sell because the pair have practically defined fashionable for so many. Cosmetic designers, fitness experts, spa companies, exercise professionals, fashion magazines, and fashion experts of all kinds have looked for endorsements from the Beckhams. Their successful marketing campaign with their own fragrance lines have shown they have what it takes to sell a product. Quite apart from the football and music careers that have made them respectively famous, David and Victoria Beckham have created a virtual empire from their glamorous lifestyle by allowing everyone to participate, if only in some small way, by wearing their clothing or wearing their fragrances.
