Lavish Goods by Bvlgari

While many companies throughout the world design and manufacture luxury products, Bvlgari’s Italian goods surpass consumer expectation. This company was first founded by a Greek gentleman by the name of Sotirios Voulgaris but was then purchased in 2011 by Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA (LVMH), a firm located in France. The official name is Bulgari but the brand is better known and trademarked as Bvlgari, which coordinates with the traditional Latin alphabet. Today, Bvlgari is an empire consisting of high-end jewelry, accessories, watches, fragrances, and even lavish hotels.

Building an Empire

Voulgaris was a talented jeweler who worked in a small Greek village called Paramythia. Although he had established a solid reputation and opened his first store, he headed to Corfu in 1877 and then on to Naples. However, it was after he moved to Rome just four years later that business really began to grow and in fact, he had the opportunity to open a second store in Via Sistina in 1884.

Over the next 21 years, the Via Sistina store thrived but with the assistance of his two sons, Costantino and Giorgio, the location changed to Via Dei Condotti. Interestingly, both the Paramythia and Via Dei Condotti Bvlgari stores remain in business today. The incredible jewelry pieces created by Voulgaris are legendary but even more so is the fact that one of his sons and his wife did something extraordinarily unselfish.

When World War II broke out, Costantino and Laura took three complete strangers into their private home for hiding. These Jewish women would have certainly met with disaster associated with the 1943 Roman ghetto raid had it not been for the kindness offered. Because of their valiant work, both Costantino and Laura received the coveted Righteous among the Nations award in 2003 while in Jerusalem.

Other notable changes for Bvlgari include the following:

Giorgio passed away in 1966 at which time his son, Gianni, along with his cousin Marina, became co-Chief Executive, followed by taking the position of Chairman and CEO in the early part of the 1970s.

  • Under Gianni and Marina’s leadership, additional Bvlgari stores opened in Paris, Geneva, Monte Carlo, and New York City
  • The entire Bvlgari business was revamped, resulting in new watch branding and improved product design
  • In 1987, Gianni resigned as CEO and sold one-third of the business to his brothers, Paolo and Nicola
  • In early 2001, a joint venture was formed between Bulgari Spa and the Luxury Division of Marriott International, allowing the launch of Bulgari Hotels & Resorts, a luxury hotel brand
  • Bulgari Spa was acquired by LVMH in 2011 for $6.01 billion. To complete the deal, it was agreed that the Bulgari family would retain 50.4% controlling state in exchange for 3% of LVMH. With this, the jewelry and watch line literally grew by 50%.
  • In 2005, three additional companies were purchased to include two watchmaking companies in Switzerland to include Prestige d’Or and Cadrans Design, as well as an Italian leather goods company called Pacini, although this was later renamed to Bulgari Accessori S.r.l.
  • There are currently more than 300 stores located around the globe with the largest being in Tokyo
